What is Ringworm?

Ringworm (Alopecia Areata) is a disease that suddenly develops with the patches of hair loss in areas such as scalp, beard or eyebrows, eyelashes. Small patches of hair loss, like circles, usually appear at the area where hair loss is experienced and it can be easily noticed from outside. In some people, hair may regrow in these areas after a while or the disease may progress. Ringworm more frequently occurs in youngsters and men.

 

What are the causes of ringworm?

Although the exact cause of the ringworm is unknown, it is thought to be mainly caused by autoimmune diseases. In ringworm, as with other autoimmune diseases, the person’s immune cells attack the hair follicles this time, causing hair loss. It is known that it is genetically transmitted as well. In addition, diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Addison’s disease, allergic reactions, lupus, vitiligo increase the risk of ringworm occurrence. 

 

How is ringworm treated?

In some cases, ringworm can be be confused with other skin problems. It is important to consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. The primary goal in the treatment of ringworm is to stop the progression of the disease. In some patients, hair regrows without the need for any treatment. In more severe cases, steroids are used for treatment. Steroids can be applied either in cream form or by mesotherapy method, depending on the condition of the disease.
